Since Memorial Day has passed everyone knows that its now officially BBQ season meaning it's time to dust off the grill or outdoor fire pit.  

If you haven’t already done so, no worries since the season lasts well into the Fall in Utah. But BBQ season also comes fire season and the two are a toxic mix. The dry landscapes, heavy winds and user error can all lead to unthinkable loss and injury.  

The beehive state has its history with BBQ related incidents that endangered the person grilling, the neighborhood, and were even just plain crazy.

American Fork, UT 2010 

In Nov. Of 2010, a man tried pouring gasoline over his grill to light it causing a huge explosion. The man was seen by witnesses to be on fire from “head to toe”, KSL said and had burns on over 50% of his body. 

Sandy, UT 2022 

A family in Sandy, Utah was displaced during June 2022 after their grill malfunctioned, Fox 13 said. It caused the house to catch on fire and the neighboring one too. However, no one was seriously injured.

Price, UT 2024 

A faulty BBQ led to a few homes getting fire damage and one home being destroyed, KUTV said. Upon investigation from the Fire Marshal’s Office, the BBQ was found to be faulty and old which caused it to not properly hold the cooking embers.  

Cedar City, UT 2024 

A couple in Southern Utah were simply trying to have a nice grilled dinner when their shed exploded. A propane grill caused a “flash explosion” as the griller walked away to water his flowers. No one was hurt and the suspected cause was a propane leak.
