Utah is home to many wild animals and some of us (it’s me) daydream about owning some exotic pets, but many can and should not be kept in captivity.

The beehive state has strict laws on protected wildlife so for those who have thought about ownings bats, opossums, racoons or skunks it’s a no. However, with certain conditions there are some exotic pets you can own and may not need a license for, like the red fox.

Since the red fox is not a protected species in Utah, you don’t need a permit however, you can’t just go out and grab one. That is not how this works, plus, how traumatizing!

If you have a red fox that was bred in captivity it is legal to own it in Utah without a year-round permit, Exotic Pet Wonderland said.

Red foxes aren’t like dogs or cats or even like coydogs or wolfdogs.

It is still an exotic pet and has tendencies that are not for everyone. It will be a challenge and unless you REALLY work for it, it’s going to cause more issues than joy.

For one, this is not an indoor pet so don’t try to make it one. Red foxes need outside enclosures covered on top and plenty of space to run around, Exotic Pet Wonderland said.

There is also the diet to consider which is not just kibble from the store but an omnivorous diet. Things like fruits, veggies and whole prey are a must.

So yes, you CAN legally own a red fox in Utah but it’s not for the faint of heart.
