Leaving a kid at home alone is a pretty nerve-wracking thing for the first time, and Utah leaves it up to the individual as to when that can happen.

There is no Utah law that has a minimum age for leaving your kid home alone. However, some states (not Utah) recommend that the kids should be at least 10 before leaving them unsupervised at home. I agree with that because any younger and they could burn the house down.

In fact, I’m not sure an older me at 12 wouldn’t have burned the house down.

I do know that I got into all sorts of trouble while home alone like watching scary movies and eating junk food with no limit. So, it really is up to how much you trust your kid and maybe how long you plan to be gone for.

Leaving Your Kid Home Alone in Utah

Utah may not have a specific law in place for leaving your kid at home alone, but using your best judgment is key. If your kid is a troublemaker, you should know they’ll get into trouble. That is just a fact of life.

Some states like Maryland have a minimum of eight years of age, and Oklahoma recommends the kids be at least 6 years of age. Those are some pretty young ages but hey, maybe your kid is super responsible, or you can trust them to be glued to the t.v. for a few hours.

If you are worried, it never hurts to have a neighbor you trust check in on your kiddo while you’re away.
