Imagine this: you’re on a lunch break at work; the sun is coming down just right, and you happen to be on a park bench which makes you nod off.

Next thing you know, an officer is writing you a citation, and your peaceful 15-minute nap costs you more than you thought it would. This could actually happen to you in Utah.

An innocent nap can turn into a dreadful situation if you happen to be sleeping anywhere in public or on public property. Though enforcement is dependent on cities, the reality is that you can’t just sleep where you want to, even for 15 minutes.

You Can’t Sleep Here in Utah

A ruling last year from the Supreme Court gave cities the right to enforce punishments for sleeping in public places like parks, benches, etc.

Though this ruling was in reference to the homeless population, anyone can be cited for catching some Zs in a public place. Basically, if you are THAT tired, maybe sleep at your desk or chug some caffeine. That would probably cost you less than the citation you may get.

Provo added to its city code outlining what can be seen as a violation. Falling asleep on a park bench probably won’t get you a ticket, but there is always a chance it could. The city was more focused on protecting walking areas and preventing illegal camping.

So, the lesson here is don’t get too comfortable in public places when you are trying to catch up on sleep. It could really cost you.
