Dia De Los Muertos is only a week away and though most Utahns don’t celebrate it, there is an easy way to do so; sugar skulls.

For those who know, Dia De Los Muertos of Day of the Dead happens just after Halloween and is a holiday that invites families to remember their loved ones. Some make altars, favorite foods of the deceased and of course, calaveras (sugar skulls).

Even if you don’t want to celebrate the holiday in the traditional sense, making sugar skulls is a super fun activity and wallet friendly. There are very few ingredients and decorating them can be a blast for kids. Basically, it's a cool activity that even Utah can try out.

The Spruce Eats has a simple recipe for sugar skulls that makes the process easy. You will need granulated sugar, water, a skull mold, meringue powder, powdered sugar and maybe some food coloring.

Then you make a sugar mixture that comes out like wet sand and put it into the skull mold. Make sure to scrape any of the excess sugar mixture off.

Once the skull has dried you can take it out and set it aside.

Next up is a sugar mixture with meringue powder and powdered sugar with some food coloring. Once you’ve mixed these together you can start decorating your sugar skulls!

Some people like to add sequins, feathers and sparkly gemstones too. You can use the icing to glue them on and remove them when you want to eat the sugar skulls.
