10 Items Utahns Should NEVER Leave In A Hot Car
Summer is quickly approaching and some places like Southern Utah are already reaching temperatures of 80 degrees or higher.
This means that it’s time to look at the items you’ve been keeping in your car.
All of us have been guilty of leaving something they definitely shouldn’t in a hot car. This does not include dogs or children, that is just common sense. It’s also illegal.

I’m talking about things you don’t even think about like an old water bottle or maybe some emergency lipstick.
Having any of your items melt in your car is a bummer to say the least but some unsuspecting items can actually be dangerous to you or your car if they get overheated. Once it starts getting into the 100 plus degree weather, it's even worse.
So, what items should Utahns not leave in their car?
Well, here is the extensive list that Breaker Link offers to those who need it.
- Sunscreen: The warmer it gets the less effective it is so keep it in a cool place. Also, it could explode.
- Bottled Water: I am super guilty of this one. Leaving bottled water in a hot car can actually cause a fire because it can refract sunlight. Oh, and sometimes the water bottle plastic melts and gets into the water which means you’re drinking tiny plastics.
- Wine: I don’t know who is leaving a bottle of wine in their car but don’t do it. It can make your wine taste worse and go bad in some cases.
- Aerosol Cans: Any pressurized can like a cleaning or hair spray will explode if the temperature gets hot enough.
- Batteries: Heat makes batteries crack their outer shell making acid and other chemicals leak out. So, don’t leave them in your car.
- Smartphones: Though your phone probably won’t explode, it could get damaged by severe heat meaning you’d have to replace it. No one wants to do that.
- Sunglasses: Heat warps the frames on glasses of any kind, prescription or sun.
- Lipstick/ Cosmetics: Runny lipstick is kind of gross. Also, any liquid cosmetic could leak or just become unusable. That would be the worst.
- Disposable Lighters: Since these little guys are gas powered the heat could make them explode and spew lighter fluid all over your car. Which...can also start a fire.
- Wet Clothes: Leaving wet clothes in a hot car can lead to an unexpected science experiment. Yeast and mold can form.
