Utah’s Depression Ranking Is One Of The Worst In U.S.
Loneliness is an epidemic that has arisen from the use of technology and the states are feeling it, even Utah.
The rankings for the loneliest states in the U.S. in 2025 are not shocking but the beehive state is unfortunately near the top. Despite the state’s family-oriented reputation, people are feeling lonelier and more depressed than ever.
Utah ranked as the 12th most depressed state in 2025, according to data from the World Population Review. The state ranked at 24.3% of the population having depression.
The state with the worst depression rate is West Virginia at 29% overall. However, Oregon has the worst depression rate increase over a five-year span as well as the worst rates for substance abuse in the country.
To no one’s surprise, Hawaii is the least depressed state in 2025 followed by New Jersey. Maybe it's the ocean vibes or literally being on an island mostly away from the world.
Whatever the exact reason, it is clear that Utah needs to take some steps to eliminate the overall depression stats in the state. Utah isn’t the best when it comes to mental health services, though it has taken steps to destigmatize it in the last few years.
So, if you’re feeling depressed, know that you’re not alone. There are unfortunately a lot Utahns and Americans (17.3 million adults) who are feeling the same way. Getting the help you need isn’t shameful so reach out when you need to.
Utah offers a few resources like counseling, the 988 help line and even groups to give support.
