This Utah Law Makes It Easy To Make A Profit From Cooking
Utah is a great place to use your kitchen or backyard grill to make a little extra money.
Because of Utah’s Microenterprise Home Kitchen Act that passed in 2021, locals have an easier time of feeding their neighbors and making a few customers. The act allows Utahns to sell foods made from their kitchens if it is sold the same day it's made. Most meats and raw milk are not allowed to be sold with the exception of rabbit meat and some poultry.
Foods under the Microenterprise Home Kitchen Act (MEHKO) have no cap on an annual salary but they can’t be eaten at the location they are made by a customer.
There can also be no resale of the products to restaurants or grocery stores.
The only thing that Utahns need for their MEHKO is a permit and a clean work area. Not too bad as far as regulations go. For selling purposes, a solid container is also required.
Though cooking is a chore for some, it would be great to be able to make a profit from it and provide some delicious food for your neighbors. Plus, as long as you stay within the restrictions, you can change the food you serve as you want without needing to reapply for a permit.
Basically, if you were looking for a way to make some cash and start a hobby that gives back locally, a MEHKO is a great way to do that. You can also look into cottage food regulations in the state and what homemade foods you can sell.
