St. George’s Golf Cart Ordinance Is Already Causing Problems
St. George recently passed an ordinance allowing golf carts to be legal on certain roads, however not everyone is following the rules.
As a regular car driver, I have no issues with golf carts being on 25 to 30 mph roads, which is where they are allowed. Southern Utah is an area rife with golf carts and places to use them. Main streets aren’t one of them.
Just yesterday while driving on River Road I had the distinct pleasure of being caught behind a golf cart.
The ordinance that was passed by the city in May, very clearly stated that golf carts were not to be used on busy and main roads. River Road certainly fits both of those descriptions.
Though Utah generally bans golf carts on roads and highways, it's up to the cities to ultimately make the decision.
Concern for young kids blowing past stop signs and operating golf carts is what brought this change to the city council. My encounter included an elderly gentleman, but the flow of traffic came to a complete stop until we could all get around him. This is concerning because road rage has been rampant in the area causing deaths and accidents.
Southern Utah doesn’t need any more metaphorical fuel added to the fire of road rage that is already an issue.
So, if you are a golf cart owner or know someone who wants to regularly drive around, please stick to the okayed streets. Main roads, and any roads that are busy are dangerous for golf carts.
