7 Street Art Locations In Cedar City
If you're into street art, Cedar City might just be the place for you.
If you’re like me and many other people, you probably follow a street/urban art page or artist on social media. According to Google’s Arts and Culture page on street art, “no one really knows if street art happened deliberately or if it was a spontaneous occurrence, but it does seem it all started in Manhattan’s Washington Heights section and by the early 80’s Graffiti was being labeled as Urban Art”. And according to Discover Goldmark, a gallery located in England, “urban art is as old as the streets themselves”. “Graffiti has been found on the walls, marketplaces, and other areas of Rome, Egypt, and Greece”. It seems that if the materials and time have been available, humans have desired to express ourselves through art.
The art form is imaginative and full of variety and some of it even provides social commentary. One of the most famous street artists is the U. K’s Banksy. The artist’s real name and identity remain unconfirmed but is probably the person most people think of when they think of socially conscious street art.
Italy’s Cibo began creating street art in 2008 after a friend of his was killed by a group of neo-fascists. Cibo, which means food in Italian, and is also a name inspired by Cibo’s work in the restaurant industry, covers neo-fascist graffiti around Italy with images of food.
If you live in Cedar City, or if you’re planning a vacation around Cedar City, you don’t have to travel very far to check out street art. In fact, most of the street art in Cedar City is in the historic downtown part of town.
