Southern Utah is home to many different clubs but one of the most unique may just be the Color Country Model Railroad Club.

Over the weekend several residents around town and the Sunriver community opened their backyards for the public. The occasion was a layout tour of different model scale trains and railroads.

The homes had some sort of signage, often a railroad crossing sign out front to invite people in.

Sadly, I only made it to three different spots, but they were each super unique and impressive. The first stop I made was at the home of Ken Mickelson who had a G scale train running through his backyard. Not only was the layout impressive but the attention to detail was astonishing.

Though Mickelson’s set up was not made after any particular railroad, visitors can see the passion and time he put into this project. He said the whole thing took roughly four years to get to where it is today.

The small buildings, figurines, and tunnel were masterpieces plus he uses solar powered lighting for most of it.

Next up was Tim Finch who also had a G scale model railroad. His backyard was packed with visitors and had several water features. Truly, the whole backyard was filled with different trains going around and unique aspects.

One area even had a fire going!

Lastly, I visited the home of Rick Hansen who had a lovely set up of his own. Also in the G model category, Hansen had several trains going along with a fun game for kids to view.

The super cool thing about Hansen’s set up was the model T train railroad which is the smallest one you can get. This thing was speedy and even super small figurines looked large compared to it.

If you missed out on the opportunity to see some of these awesome set ups, the Color Country Model Railroad Club website will keep you updated.
