It’s May, which means it’s time for Free Comic Book Day. It’s one of the most fun times of the year if you’re a bit of a nerd like me and if you don’t know what Free Comic Book Day is well, you’re in the right place to find out.

Free Comic Book Day is an annual promotional effort to bring attention to independent comic book stores. Free Comic Book Day was the idea of Joe Field in 2001 and the first Free Comic Book Day took place the following year. Each year Free Comic Book Day is organized by Diamond Comic Distributors and includes over 2,000 participating comic book stores where millions of comics are given away annually. Free Comic Book Day takes place on the first Saturday in May. It includes free comic books from several publishers that include Marvel and DC and also includes merchandise designed specifically for the day.

Here in southern Utah, we’re lucky to have two local comic shops that are part of Free Comic Book Day. Take a look at these two independent comic shops and make your plans for Saturday.
