Parent Teacher Committee and Big Budgets

I never thought joining the parent committee would land me in a room where millions of dollars were on the line. But there I was—representing parents at our high school, watching a student press the button that finalized the annual budget.

Student Spends Millions

Our principal had a tradition: once his team crunched the numbers and we, the budget committee, gave our nod of approval, a student got the honor of submitting the final budget. Why? So they could say they’d “spent millions” before even graduating. It was part brag, part rite of passage—and oddly empowering.

Time To Spend

The day we approved the budget, the room buzzed with a mix of seriousness and celebration. Teachers, admin, and a few of us parents had reviewed every line item. Then came the moment. The student—grinning like they’d just won the lottery—clicked “submit.” Laughter followed, along with a few mock gasps. “There goes $12 million,” someone joked.

Watching that student take part in a real-world decision reminded me why I’d joined the committee in the first place. It wasn’t just about numbers—it was about trust, transparency, and giving students a taste of responsibility.

I left that day with a new appreciation for our school’s intricate and complex system—and a story that still makes me smile. After all, how many people can say they have spent multiple millions… and didn’t even flinch?
