Picture this: you’re jamming loudly in your car and basically having a mini concert on your way to work when sirens flash behind you. You’re going the speed limit; you just replaced your taillights, but could it be you?

Well, loud music in a car isn’t anything new or infrequent in Utah but the real question lies in whether it’s legal or not.

The answer isn’t simple because it depends on where you are.

Sure, you might be annoying other drivers and depending on the time of day, noise ordinances play a part. For example, I would not recommend blasting Sabrina Carpenters Please, Please, Please at full volume through Veyo, UT since they have a noise restriction.

I’m a big fan of cranking up my stereo and vibing in my car when I go places because it calms my nerves and gives me endorphins. However, I can totally see where it may be a bit annoying.

Utah has laws on sirens, horns and other warning devices attached to vehicles but not one law that encompasses the state on loud music from cars.

The issues that stem from loud music can be distracting driving, distracting other drivers and possibly not being able to hear emergency sirens. If you are a good and responsible driver, you’ll also be able to listen to music and watch for emergency vehicles.

So, until further laws change just watch where you are blasting your music and the time of day. If you see me around town jamming out in my car...no you don’t.
