How Trump’s New Transgender Policies Are Already Impacting Utah
This time last year, Utah was dealing with cases of gender dysphoria on the rise and that number could become higher after Trump’s executive orders.
Since his entrance to office on Monday, Transgender peoples have been targeted in a variety of ways by the Trump administration. The order to recognize only two sexes has garnered the most attention, however, it doesn’t stop there.
The Hill said that Trump also has policies that would make calling someone a deadname (a name given at birth but no longer used) or incorrect pronouns acceptable in federal workplaces.
There will also be no more federal funding for gender affirming care if these policies go through.
Utah has about 2,100 transgender youth between 13 and 17 and 13,700 adults, the Salt Lake Tribune said. These numbers are estimations from a 2022 Williams Institute at the UCLA School of Law study.
Utah has been making changes most noticeably with transgender policies when it comes to sports. However, with backing from the Trump administration, these policies could become more constricting for the Transgender community of Utah.
Already there have been incidents in the beehive state where those who identify as transgender are targeted in places like universities. A story from the SLT earlier this week showed the impacts of the new president's policies and views at Utah State University regarding dorm rooms and genders.
This is just the beginning of the changes happening on a federal level lead by President Trump. The trickle down in Utah is already evident.
