How To Deal With Smoke In The Air In Utah
Southern Utah has been experiencing some smoke issues from wildfires up north rendering the skies a sickly brown over the past few days.
On Sept. 11 it is especially bad, and smoke is covering all of St. George. There is not much one can do in this instance besides hope for winds to shift and blow it away. However, there are some things to help with the air quality in your home.
PBS said that during Sept. Of 2020, wildfires and smoke ravaged the U.S. This led to evacuations and many destroyed acres. Though Southern Utah isn’t the area of any wildfires right now, the shift in winds has brought the smoke and the gloom.
During these kinds of air quality conditions, more people end up in the hospital possibly due to pre-existing conditions like asthma.
So, before anything else be aware of your health during smokey days and keep on eye on the forecast to better prepare for them
Here is how Southern Utah can “fight” the smoke:
Water
Drink plenty of water during smokey days and keep some with you just in case. Water can help detoxify your kidneys and liver from any inhaled smoke, PBS said.
Masking
I know that masks have a bad rep for some people but wearing them while out when its smokey can help lessen what is inhaled. An N95 mask is the best, however masks with several layers also help filter the particles inhaled.
Air Filter
Having one on at home during smokey conditions helps ensure that your house's air stays clean. If you must go out, a portable air purifier would be best.
Exercise
It may not really sound like much but try not to exercise outside during smoke conditions. The harder you work out the more smoke you inhale. So, take it easy for a few days or work out inside.
