Utah is a windy state and though we don’t frequently get tornadoes, the wind itself can cause massive damage.

Some people may just think of the wind as an annoyance, and it is, but the amount of damage from high winds is pretty severe. Heck, the amount of damage just to one's face from the dust is pretty severe. There are plenty of reasons to be cautious of Utah’s common winds gusts and storms.

Powerlines, trees, homes, cars, mailboxes and sometimes even humans can be a victim of powerful Utah gusts.

Last June, Utah residents saw some tree damage and power outages from some pretty brutal windstorms. More recently, a family in Grantsville had a tree come through their home after high winds.

Utah may be a place where we can generally avoid natural disasters like tornadoes, however the wind still poses a significant danger to people and property.

Wind Speeds that Cause Property Damage

  • Very Windy is 26 mph to 39 mph with a moderate risk to property and life.
  • High wind is 40 mph winds to 57 mph with a high threat to life and property.
  • Damaging High Wind is winds higher than 58 mph and is a very high risk to life a property.

Basically, once the gusts or sustained winds get higher than 25, it's best to be careful and lock down property you are worried about. Plus, there is always an awful chance that your home could be damaged. Keep an eye out for a “High Wind Warning” to better prepare yourself and your property.
