Layoffs in Utah (and across the country) have been concerning, especially in the tech sector but there is hope and ways to pull through.

Losing a job is always stressful and regardless of the reason the company gives, it can be painful for the individuals laid off. Just last week, a tech company released thousands in its workforce impacting Utah.

The job market isn’t great, and Utah is no exception to that. If you or someone you know has been laid off, here are some things you should remember; there is a physical and emotional toll.

Stanford University gave some symptoms that you may experience:

  • Anxiety
  • Anger
  • Fear
  • Sadness
  • No self esteem
  • Finding less or no joy in things
  • Weight loss
  • Headaches
  • Nausea
  • Loss of sleep
  • Fatigue

These are just some of the symptoms someone who is laid off may experience. Most people have unfortunately gone through being laid off at least once and I can tell you that it sucks.

It’s an all-encompassing anxiety and stress that you can’t even sleep through.

However, one way to push through is to lean on the people around you, Stanford University said. Tell your close friends and family and let them know what you are feeling, how it will have an impact on you.

Be aware of your body. It may feel easier to just sit in shock but try to get moving. Exercise is a good way to deal with stress, Stanford University said.

The best and biggest thing that helped me was learning to be kind to myself. Give yourself the space to heal and do things that bring your joy or peace. You’ll want to lose yourself in thoughts of anger and resentment but don’t let that bring you down forever.

Lastly, Stanford University recommends writing down how you feel and keeping a positive attitude. Don’t keep those feelings inside and recognize that this won’t be your situation forever. This is just a moment in your life, and nothing ever stays the same.
