Cottonwood Fire Crews Making Ground While Evacuations Hold Near Beaver

Wildfire activity continues to challenge firefighters across southern Utah, with both the Babylon Fire in southeastern Utah and the Cottonwood Fire near Beaver remaining active despite steady progress on containment efforts.

The Babylon Fire has now grown to an estimated 103,633 acres and is 25 percent contained. Fire officials report that fire activity is expected to remain active, particularly on the northeast side of the fire. That activity continues to create air quality concerns for communities in San Juan County.

Monticello Air Quality Impacted

Monticello is expected to experience moderate air quality for much of the day, with periods of unhealthy conditions possible for sensitive groups, especially during overnight hours. In Blanding, White Mesa and Bluff, air quality is forecast to remain good during the day before deteriorating to moderate levels overnight as smoke settles into the area. Moab and Canyonlands National Park are expected to see generally good air quality.

Officials are also urging residents to take precautions as an Extreme Heat Warning remains in effect from Saturday afternoon through Sunday evening. Smoke exposure, combined with dangerous heat, can increase health risks, particularly for older adults, children and individuals with respiratory conditions.

Cottonwood Fire Tops 97,000 Acres

Meanwhile, firefighters continue making progress on the Cottonwood Fire burning in the Fishlake National Forest near Beaver. The fire is estimated at 97,130 acres and is now 58 percent contained.

More than 1,100 personnel remain assigned to the fire, supported by 26 crews, 41 engines, 13 helicopters and four unmanned aerial systems. Firefighters responded to increased fire activity Thursday, using helicopter bucket drops in Cottonwood Creek while ground crews and heavy equipment strengthened containment lines around the fire.

Fire managers continue coordinating with local officials to allow limited access for residents and utility crews when conditions permit. Hazard tree removal and roadway clearing operations are also continuing to improve emergency access in affected areas.

A community meeting is scheduled for Friday evening at Beaver High School, where fire officials will provide an update on firefighting efforts and discuss the potential for post-fire flooding.

Evacuations remain in effect for Hi-Lo Estates, Merchant Valley, Eagle Point, Arrowhead Summer Homes and surrounding areas. Highway 153 between Beaver and Junction remains closed, while portions of the Fishlake National Forest and nearby Bureau of Land Management lands also remain closed. Stage 2 fire restrictions continue across the affected region as hot, dry and windy conditions persist through the weekend.
