Utah Shines In Civic Engagement As Independence Day Approaches

I have a lot of hope about the upcoming Independence Day celebration. My hope is this: that for one day we can just bridle our political disagreements and just reflect on and celebrate the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the founding of our nation 250 years ago. That's my hope, but my fear is that the reports we'll hear that day is that it is just another day of bickering and divisiveness. Hope I'm wrong, but I know what the media does all too well.

Anyway, it seems like one of our favorite pastimes these days is to measure and rank things, and so WalletHub has released its list of the Most Patriotic States in America. Utah did ok, but I wish we had shown up higher.

The WalletHub study attempts to measure patriotism through a combination of military participation and civic engagement. Rather than relying on public opinion surveys, the ranking uses 13 measurable factors including military enlistment, veterans per capita, voter participation, volunteerism, Peace Corps service, AmeriCorps participation, jury service, and civics education requirements. Civic engagement accounts for 75% of the score, while military engagement makes up the remaining 25%.

For Utah residents, the most notable finding is that Utah ranked 11th overall in the nation, placing it comfortably among the most patriotic states. While Utah ranked only 35th in military engagement, it excelled in civic participation, finishing ninth in civic engagement and earning the highest volunteer rate in the country. WalletHub found that Utah residents volunteer at a higher rate than any other state, a statistic that significantly boosted its overall ranking.

The most patriotic state in the nation was identified as Virginia, followed by Montana and Vermont. Virginia's strong showing was driven by its large military presence, high number of veterans, strong voter turnout, and significant Peace Corps participation.

That result highlights an important aspect of the study's methodology. Patriotism, according to WalletHub's measurements, is not limited to military service. Voting, volunteering, participating in community organizations, serving on juries, and engaging in civic life all contribute heavily to a state's score. In fact, voter participation in the 2024 presidential election carried the single largest weight in the rankings.

The study also revealed interesting regional patterns. Several western states performed exceptionally well, with Colorado, Oregon, Washington, and Utah all finishing in the top 12. Meanwhile, some traditionally patriotic states in the public imagination, including Texas and Florida, ranked surprisingly low due to weaker civic engagement scores despite strong military participation.

Utah Leads The Nations In Volunteerism

One of the most striking Utah-specific findings was the state's leadership in volunteerism. While states such as Vermont and Minnesota also scored highly in volunteer rates, Utah ranked first nationally, suggesting that community service remains one of the state's defining civic characteristics.

Overall, the WalletHub analysis paints a picture of patriotism that extends beyond flags and fireworks. According to the study, patriotism is demonstrated not only by serving the country in uniform, but also by serving neighbors, participating in elections, and remaining actively involved in community life. Under that definition, Utah stands among America's most patriotic states.
