The One Place to Avoid Exploring in Utah

Utah is home to some amazing places to explore. Mountains like Timpanogos or Kings peak are exhilarating to hike. Zion National Park and Arches National Park are just a small part of the vast canyons and deserts to put on your list of destinations to see.

So, is there somewhere you shouldn’t explore? A place to avoid putting on your hiking boots and going for a visit? A place like the Bingham Copper Mine could be on that list. But the number one place to not visit is the Clive Disposal Facility located 75 miles west of Salt Lake City.

Low Level Nuclear Waste Disposal

This place located in the west desert is where nuclear waste from around the country is brought and buried underground. It began in the 1950’s when the government was testing nuclear weapons as a place to store spent radioactive materials.

It is now owned by Energy Solutions who keep a close eye on what is brought in and how it is stored. After the waste materials are brought in by train, they are buried in large bunkers and closely monitored. Their safety record is impressive.

Well-Guarded Ground

Because of the nature of what they do, the company doesn’t let just anyone enter the grounds. There is no way you could wander into this location by mistake and that is a good thing.

The safest way to explore this part of Utah would be on Google Earth. So, leave your lead lined hiking shoes at home and head to one of our National Parks instead.
