Living in Southern Utah, you can find plenty of pests trying to invade your home. I have had scorpions the last year thinking they belong on the inside and keep showing up on my front porch. Now an increase of rats and mice are being reported in the area.

The Pest Problem in Southern Utah

I am giving you fair warning that what I am about to tell you may cause you to stop sleeping for a week or two. A woman I know lives in townhome in St. George and a week ago she woke up and discovered rat droppings on her pillow.

In a story from last fall, KSL quotes a local pest control company who said they have seen an increase in the number of calls they have received from homeowners complaining about rodents invading.

Attracting Rodents: Don't Leave Food Outside

Luckily, there are things you can do to limit your interactions with mice and rats. If you have a chicken coop, or you live next to someone who does, the grain could be attracting rodents.

This could also be true of bird feeders and pet food that is left outside. Rural areas with animals and barns where there is loose grain and feed can attract mice and rats. Keeping control of these areas will deter rodent populations.

If you have been experiencing problems with rats, you may be able to handle a small problem with traps and cleaning up your yard. If the problems persist, it may be time to call in the experts.

That’s what the woman who lives in St. George has done. She called pest control and then promptly moved somewhere else until their work is done. I don’t blame her.
