How Jonathan Got Sorted into His School Group

Chapter 5 Solomon Installment 28

She was a middle-aged woman with stringy brown hair that framed a kind face and a slight figure. She had a tired smile and looked like her soul had been stretched by life. She patted Jonathan on the shoulder and ushered him into the room.

His mother leaned in to talk to Miss Winn with an intense quietness, her head bent to the shorter woman. She occasionally glanced over darkly at Jonathan, which would cause Miss Winn to nod her head in concern. At last, his mother smiled and waved at him and left the class.

Jonathan gets assigned to the Gastropods

Miss Winn assigned each child a seat and told them they might move around throughout the year. Jonathan had been assigned a seat at "The Growing Gastropods” table.

They spent the day talking about the alphabet and numbers. Miss Winn, that day and every day, was very careful with Jonathan, never giving him too much to do and taking whatever work he gave her as satisfactory.

Although many kids did move from table to table that year, Jonathan was always in the same place, looking at that smiling snail.

The only time he didn’t feel like he belonged with the snails was when he was with Solomon. His brother didn’t seem to be aware of labels. He treated Jonathan where he was at that moment and nothing else.

As he placed his present on the brightly decorated table and wiped his hand on his pants, he smiled to himself. He was glad this was a day for Solomon.
