Chapter 8 Aunt Gert Installment 43
Birthday parties were not a normal occurrence at Jonathan’s house. This party for Solomon would never have happened had it not been for his Aunt Gert.

Gert was related somehow on his father’s side, though he had no idea how. His father’s parents had both passed away before Jonathan was born. His mother’s parents were still alive, but he only saw them once or twice a year and that was fairly brief. His mother visited her parents often, but always by herself. She would return after a weekend bubbly and chatty. Jonathan would watch his mother talk on and on while his father nodded, reading one of his papers.
She Brings a Party
Gert, on the other hand, came to visit on most holidays and would stay for at least a few hours. When she did, their home became a happier and friendlier place.
A big woman, who always wore colorful dresses and strings of white pearls, Gert had a stack of dark brown hair that piled on top of her head. She had a kind, expressive face that enhanced her oversized personality. She was a woman that said exactly what she thought, the moment she thought it. Though her comments were almost always pointed and a bit tactless, it was clear she was a tease. Her loving manner took the sting out of any of her words.
Jonathan’s parents considered her family and for the most part enjoyed when she came over. They rarely invited her but were always pleasant when she called and told them of her plans to visit. She always brought gifts when she came, whether it was a holiday that required such a thing or not.
