Suspect In Custody Of 3 Murdered Women in Central Utah
Tragic Events in Wayne County
A normally quiet Wayne County community in Central Utah is shaken up after three women were found murdered, setting off a massive multi-state manhunt.
Manhunt for Suspect Ivan Miller
Authorities say that the suspect, 22-year old Ivan Miller of Blakesburg, Iowa, was arrested Thursday morning after investigators tracked one of the victim's stolen vehicles across several states. According to the Utah Department of Public Safety, this vehicle traveled from Central Utah, to Southern Utah, into Northern Arizona and eventually into Colorado.
Crime Scene: From Utah to Colorado
Law enforcement later located the abandoned vehicle in Pagosa Springs, Colorado where officers conduced a brief search before taking the suspect into custody without incident. Officials have assured that there are no additional suspects and no ongoing threat to the public.
The Victims: A Community's Loss
This investigation began on Wednesday afternoon when authorities received a report of two women found dead on a hiking trail near Torrey, Utah. Torrey is located not far from Capitol Reef National Park. The victims were friends in their 30's and 40's and were discovered by their husbands. As investigators continued their search, a third victim, an elderly woman in her 80's was found dead inside a home in nearby town, Lyman. Authorities believe the suspect killed the woman at her residence before stealing her vehicle and driving to the trailhead where the two other victims were attacked.
Investigative Challenges and Community Response
This case has left many questions unanswered. Investigators say that Miller appears to have no known connection to the victims in this area, and the motive remains unclear and unknown. During the search for the suspect, schools, public services, and businesses across Wayne County were closed as residents were urged to stay home and lock their doors.
With the suspect in custody, officals say the community can breathe a little easier. Miller is expected to be extradited to Utah to face charges.
