April 11 marks National Pet Day, and though it is a time to celebrate furry friends it's about a whole lot more.

National Pet Day is meant to bring attention to pets who may be neglected or not have a home at all. It’s the perfect time to treat your own furry friend with extra love and take them in for a checkup at the vet. Also check vaccination dates and that tags are updated!

There are also ways to give back to the local pet community like volunteering at shelters or dropping off food and toys for those who don’t have a home.

St. George has a few shelters and rescues in the area and has volunteer programs and donation-based organizations. There are non-kill facilities and city-owned shelters.

This rescue has been in the St. George community for over 20 years saving animals and providing support to animals in need. They rescue dogs and cats of all age ranges and needs while reaching out to foster homes to get shelter for the animals as quickly as possible. They also help with medical expenses for other organizations when possible. PAWS offers different types of volunteer opportunities as well as events and fundraisers to be a part of.

RSQ

RSQ Utah is a newer organization that has been in St. George over the last few years. They focus on “being a voice for the voiceless, bettering the lives of animals in a rural community” the mission statement said. According to the website, they are a unique rescue because they take on extreme medical cases. Another thing that sets RSQ apart is it does not limit the animals its rescues to cats and dogs but birds, rabbits, horses and small animals as well.

St. George Animal Services and Shelter

Owned by the City of St. George, the St. George Animal Shelter is run by the St. George Police Department. Limited to dogs and cats, the shelter is to house unwanted or abandoned animals. There are donation opportunities for the public. To visit, an appointment is required.
