It isn’t uncommon to see road construction happening all over Southern Utah, but it does make you wonder what the heck is going on.

Since the weather is usually pretty mild in Southern Utah, especially in Spring and Fall, roadside construction seems to be a never-ending endeavor. The Utah Department of Transportations (UDOT) always seems to have no less than two projects going at once.

They actually have several projects going on all the time across the state.

So, what projects should Southern Utahns know about?

There are a few projects in the works that UDOT is figuring out and some that are even still in the design phase.

Road Construction Projects So. Utahns Need to Be Aware Of

South Bluff Street Corridor

Though this project is a while a way, a public hearing on the matter was held recently on April 24. The project is expected to work from St. George Blvd to the Convention Center starting roughly sometime in Jan. 2026.

What it will do: The South Bluff Street Corridor Project is expected to address several points. Upgrading the pavement, adding a new Active Transportation Trail, lessening conflict areas, and improving intersections are the main focuses.

State Route 9 Zion Canyon

A bigger project in conjunction with Zion Canyon and the National Parks Services is aiming to deal with connectivity and safety issues. Fiber optic cables will be added to or installed on SR-9 to get communities better “connectivity”. It is currently still in the design phase and will begin sometime in 2026.

What it will do: Basically, adding the fiber optic cables along SR-9 will allow for Intelligent Transportations Systems (ITS) to be added which helps with safety. ITS is weather monitors, traffic cameras, road signs, etc. This is mainly to help visitors to Zion National Park.

These are just a few of the fully planned out projects that are ongoing in Southern Utah. There is more to come.
