Which Of These 20 Designs Will Be The New Utah Flag?
This is the current Utah State Flag.
Look at this beautiful thing. Makes you want to stand up, put your hand to your brow with a salute, then call your momma and tell her you're proud to be an American.
So when you heard they wanted to change it, I'm sure you were, like me, a bit resistant.
You may be surprised as I was, that the current state flag was adopted as recently as 2011. Granted, the preceding designs have been more or less the same with just minor variations.
But that's not to say people haven't tried to change it. For example just 20 years ago, The Salt Lake Tribune along with the North American Vexillological Association solicited designs for a new state flag.
Although many people submitted designs, none of them were ever adopted by the state.
Fast forward to 2021, when state senator Dan McCay sponsored a bill to create a task force to assess the need for redesigning Utah's state flag. The bill also designated an official flag to commemorate the 125th anniversary of Utah's statehood. And that flag looked like this:
Although many people no doubt would like to either keep the old flag or the design above, on January 19th 2022, Utah Gov. Spencer Cox proclaimed the day Utah’s first-ever More Than A Flag Day. The statewide initiative, managed by the Utah Department of Cultural & Community Engagement, invited suggestions of flag designs from Utah residents.
Thousands of designs were submitted, with the following 20 designs being selected as the semi-finalists. Take a look at the designs and make sure to VOTE on your favorites!
