Utah is heating up and it's easy for us humans to simply go back into the shade but for our furry friends, cooling down is a bit harder.

Dogs pant to cool down their body temperature which is why you see them doing so after a hike or during the warmer months. Since June, pet owners should be aware of the risks that are associated with heat stroke and be mindful of keeping their pets from burning pavement.

Let’s be honest, getting up for hikes super early or walks can be difficult to do every day. In the evenings you need to wait until 9 p.m. for the temperatures to cool. However, just keeping your dog inside lounging around can be boring and create behavior problems.

AARP gives a few tips on how you can keep your dog entertained inside. This includes both physical and mental stimulation for your pet. Besides being good for them, it can also be a bonding experience and super fun for you and your dog.

Physical Exercise

If you have the space, setting up an indoor agility course could be an awesome idea, especially if your dog is used to being outdoors and exploring more often. This would help with obedience and be just a fun new hobby for you both.

Another option is getting a dog-safe treadmill and having your pup walk on it during the day. If you can, fetch is also a good option.

Mental Exercise

Playing games that keep your dog entertained and learning is a fun way to improve their obedience and concentration. Games like hide and seek, regular training regimens and puzzles are great for your dog. Here is a full list of game ideas for you and your pup.

Other Options

I like to look up recipes for my dog that I can make on the weekend and freeze. This is fun and you can experiment with new flavors to see what your dog likes. Changing out their toys helps keep them from getting bored or chewing on things you don't want them to.

Though it can be expensive, daycare for your dog is also an option if you have the funds. Even once a week when you're at work will be helpful. Your pup will get some social interaction and be tired out allowing you to rest a bit after a long hot day.
