Wave Goodbye

It's the final week of voting for the new design of the Cedar City flag. The city received over sixty designs from area residents, and a panel of judges has narrowed the field down to six final designs. The city wants to hear from you on the choice of the new flag. 

The flag redesign project was initiated by the Cedar City Youth Council earlier this year. Council members were inspired by the Utah State Flag Redesign project and how it impacted the state. Youth council members took a look at the current Cedar City Flag and concluded that it could be redesigned to better represent the uniqueness of Cedar City. 

 The youth council then developed a program to implement the redesign of the Cedar City Flag. The Flag Redesign Project took the form of a community contest, starting with a call for submissions of a new flag design from community members. That phase of the contest has now, of course, been completed, and the city wants you to participate in a final selection.

Here, in no particular order, is a look at the six designs selected by the panel of judges. 

This flag features a blue background that represents our open skies and reminds us of the Utah state flag. The yellow and orange borders contrast with the blue background and represent both dawn and dusk. The large white circle represents our close-knit community. 

The next flag features a symbol in the center of the flag depicts the Coat of Arms of the 213th Armored Field Artillery Battalion. Inside the Coat of Arms, are many objects of symbolism. The two hanging eagle feathers represent the Cedar Band of Paiutes. 

This next flag depicts the beautiful views you get around town. You can see the gorgeous mountains, and you are able to view the seasonal banners that depict the many events we hold around town. 

The next flag to consider has a Juniper tree featured in the center. We have an abundance of Juniper trees in the area, and received our name due to a misunderstanding from the LDS Pioneers who settled this area. The beautiful sunsets that we have in Cedar City are depicted in this flag, as the sun dips down behind our mountains. 

The next flag option displays some of the classic Cedar City buildings: the Southern Utah Museum of Art, Southern Utah University’s Belltower, and the Old Rock Church. They represent the generations of Cedar City citizens and their ancestors. 

The final option depicts the basis of Festival City USA. It incorporates the pennant flags found in the current city logo in addition to the city colors. The pennants mimic those found in the first festival, the Utah Shakespeare Festival.  

 Votes on the new city flag are being accepted via online submission through Wednesday, November 1st. The following Wednesday, November 8th, the Cedar City Council will make the final selection.
