Cedar City Is Getting A Nature Playground Right At The Canyon’s Edge
There will be a little inconvenience for some drivers in Cedar City on Wednesday. Drivers traveling through north Cedar City will need to plan for a temporary detour on Wednesday as construction begins on one of the city's newest neighborhood parks.
A portion of Nichols Canyon Road will be closed Wednesday, Aug. 5, while crews begin work associated with the construction of Fiddler's Canyon Park. Motorists are encouraged to use alternate routes and allow additional travel time while the closure is in effect.
The temporary inconvenience marks another milestone for a project that will provide a new recreational destination for one of Cedar City's fastest-growing neighborhoods. The approximately 2.5-acre park is being built at the northeast corner of Main Street and Nichols Canyon Road, where it will serve local residents while also welcoming visitors headed to the popular Fiddler's Canyon trail system.
New Park Will Have Unique Amenities
Rather than duplicating amenities found elsewhere in the city's park system, Fiddler's Canyon Park has been designed to reflect the area's natural surroundings. Plans call for a modern playground featuring nature-inspired play elements, a pavilion for community gatherings, public restrooms, landscaped open space, a pedestrian bridge over the drainage channel and a parking lot. The goal is to create a park that blends with the canyon setting while offering a unique outdoor experience for families and visitors.

The project has been years in the making. Cedar City's adopted concept plan was developed through recommendations from the Fiddler's Advisory Committee, the Leisure Services Advisory Committee and city staff before advancing into the engineering and construction phases. The work extends beyond the park itself, with improvements planned for roads, sidewalks, utilities, irrigation infrastructure and other site enhancements that will support both the initial development and future expansion.
As Cedar City's north end continues to grow, city leaders see Fiddler's Canyon Park as an investment in the community's future, providing additional recreational opportunities while preserving the scenic character that makes the area a favorite destination for both residents and visitors.
Drivers are reminded to watch for posted detour signs and use caution when traveling near the construction zone during Wednesday's temporary closure of Nichols Canyon Road.
