Cedar Area Interfaith Alliance Hosts Cedar City’s National Day Of Prayer Event

Thursday is the annual National Day Of Prayer, and the Cedar Area Interfaith Alliance is inviting everyone to the Cedar City Community Prayer Gathering. The event is set to begin at 7:00PM and will be held Gilbert Great Hall in the R. Haze Hunter Alumni Center on the campus of Southern Utah University. Admission is free and all are welcome.

In the world today there are some who question the efficacy of prayer and downplay the practice in day to day life. On the radio this morning, we asked the question, “what would you tell someone who asks you 'why do you pray?'” Several answers could come to mind. Prayer is an expression of belief and an act of faith.

An answer came to me that I believe has a more a little different approach and I believe could give a course that would be beneficial to society. When you pray, the attention is taken away from....you.

The mere act of putting forth a petition to deity expresses an acknowledgement that there is a source more in control of our situations then we are.

Moreover, while in out petitions to the heavens, we may indeed be asking for gifts or good fortune to come our way, but most often there is a desire expressed that will seek providence to come the way to others who are important to us and who are in need of assistance. Again, that shifts our thinking from ourselves to others.

And in asking for help for others, we may see ways where we ourselves may see the way to provide that help.

I believe a day set aside for the nation to unite and offer prayer is the sign of a healthy society.
