The orange peel theory has been trending on social media. This isn’t about eating the peel of the fruit and its benefits, it actually has to do with relationships. It started with a post where a woman contacted her ex and asked if he remembered peeling her oranges because she didn’t like to. He said he did and that one day she would learn to do it herself. He eventually blocked her.

It has now turned into posts about whether your partner does little things for you and how that shows love or the lack of it in a relationship. It has even gone so far to become something you can do to test how responsive the other person is, which is probably not a good idea unless you are looking for reasons to break up.

So, how does this play out in Utah? In a survey of what states do the most service and charitable giving, Utah came out as number one. That would seem to indicate that lots of oranges are getting peeled in the beehive state.

Also, Utah is known for strong families and that has to start with a strong relationship. This may indicate the willingness of couples to do little things for each other. It could also mean the spouse knows to buy the little tangerines where the peel is almost falling off, and therefore, never have to help. We are good problem solvers.

What do you think? Are Utahn’s better or worse at doing little things to serve their significant other? I’m not sure myself. In fact, I think there is probably more to what is going on here.

I think the whole thing could be looked at through the lens of the “Five Love Languages”. This is from a book by Gary Chapman that says all people fall into five basic ways of feeling loved. It could be that people who appreciate their orange peeled have "acts of service" as their love language.

Whatever the truth, if you are asked to peel an orange, give it a try and see if things improve. If they don’t, block her.
