You may have heard of uranium that was used to create atomic weapons and power plants. It can be found in small concentrations all over the earth. As uranium breaks down, it gives off a gas called radon. This can become a health hazard under certain conditions.

Exposure to Radon Gas Can Can Lead to Lung Cancer

When radon gas escapes in open outside air, it dissipates quickly and is not harmful. The danger comes when it seeps up through cracks in a foundation and gets trapped in some inside space. Over time, exposure to radon has serious consequences.

The gas has particles that are radioactive. When breathing it in it can cause cancer. The Utah Geological Survey said this about the danger of radon:

Between 1973 and 2015, there were approximately 5,630 fatalities in Utah attributable to lung cancer caused by radon gas (based on World Health Organization general estimate that 14% of lung cancer cases are attributable to radon gas)

Tools to Help You Protect Against Radon

The best way to check if your home or business has a radon gas problem is to conduct a test. There are tests you can do on your own and more extensive tests that can be conducted if the first test signals a problem.

There is also this site which lists the risks of radon gas by zip code. If you live in an area with high concentrations, you could look into it.
