Teddy Valley Fire Adds to a Punishing Summer for Beaver and Central Utah

Another wildfire is burning in southwest Utah, adding to a summer already marked by major fires, evacuations and destructive flooding in the Beaver and Fillmore areas.

The Teddy Valley Fire was reported Thursday, Aug. 27, near the Iron County and Beaver County line. Early incident information listed the fire at roughly 200 acres, burning on state land, with a natural cause reported. The fire was being managed as a Type 4 incident. A Summer of Suffering: Beaver County's Fire and Flood Crisis

For folks in Beaver County, another wildfire is an unwelcome sight. Earlier this summer, the Cottonwood Fire burned more than 97,000 acres in Beaver and Piute counties. Then heavy monsoon rain fell over the burn scar, triggering severe flash flooding that damaged roads, homes and water infrastructure around Beaver. Gov. Spencer Cox ultimately declared a state of emergency for Beaver, Piute and Sevier counties because of the combined wildfire and flood damage.

Farther north, the Fillmore area has faced its own difficult fire season. The Widemouth 2 Fire grew to roughly 125,000 acres in August, becoming Utah’s largest wildfire at the time. As containment improved, concern shifted toward flash flooding and debris flows from newly burned terrain, and Fillmore residents were placed on evacuation readiness because of the combined fire and flood threat.
