Okay, before we get started, I want to put out a giant trigger warning for the content you’re about to read. If you’re triggered by the topic of sexual assault, it would probably be best to not read this.

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month and with that is Denim Day. Denim Day came about in 1999 after an Italian Supreme Court ruling. The Italian Supreme Court overturned the rape conviction of a driving instructor who assaulted an 18-year-old student he was teaching. The Italian Supreme Court decided to overturn the conviction because the student was wearing tight jeans and the court felt she would need to help the driving instructor remove them implying consent. The women of the Italian Parliament were not having it and the next day they came to work wearing jeans in solidarity with the victim.

The protest by the women of the Italian Parliament was picked up by international media and was seen by the organization Peace Over Violence. Peace Over Violence then began planning the first Denim Day. You can help support Denim Day at the Denim Day link here and I’ll also leave a link for Canyon Creek Services here.
