Cedar City Bibliophiles Unite!
National Book Lovers Day will soon be upon us. So, as a book lover, I thought I would tell you a little bit about the history of books and where in Cedar City you can visit to celebrate.
According to Britannica.com, the earliest surviving written literature is from Mesopotamia.
And Google Arts and Culture write that one of the first books can be seen in the creation of ancient scrolls, going as far back as the 4th millennium BCE.
Those scrolls often made using a papyrus plant when unraveled could be 14 to 52 feet wide.
Google Arts and Culture also state that the type of books that look most like the books we read today were created by the Romans as early as the 1st century CE and were made with parchment paper and bound with wooden covers. It looks like early book readers had to watch out for slivers.
The world’s earliest printed book is the “Diamond Sutra” thought to have been created between the 2nd and 5th centuries CE.
Printing becomes much easier in 1439 with the invention of the printing press by Johannes Gutenberg.
Many, many, many years later that brings us to 2023 where we now have National Book Lovers Day.
In Cedar City, you can celebrate the best day to be a bibliophile at Main Street Books. Main Street Books is located at 25 North Main Street and also has an entrance through The Grind Coffee Shop next door.
If you aren’t committed to finding a book to buy just yet, you can also head over to the Cedar City Library. The Cedar City Library is located at 303 North 100 East next to Main Street Park.
National Book Lovers Day is August 9th.
