According to Velo Outside.com, the Belgian Waffle Ride was the idea of Michael Marckx’s desire to build a Belgian-style classic in North San Diego County in 2011. Also, to “pay homage to the Belgian classics, Marckx names the various dirt sections and painful climbs with Belgium-inspired names such as “Kakaboutet”, “Twistenweg”, and “Muur van Dubbelberg”.
