A long line that sometimes reached out into the street moved remarkably quickly. If you ordered a large drink, they were giving away Dutch Bros t-shirts and other swag.

Before we get into Dutch Bros history, let’s take a quick look at the history of coffee.

According to the National Coffee Association, no one knows how or when coffee was discovered, but one of the first instances can be traced back to an Ethiopian legend. “According to the legend, a goat herder named Kaldi noticed that after his goats ate berries from a certain tree, they became so energetic that they didn’t want to sleep at night”. Coffee cultivation and trade began on the Arabian Peninsula and by the 15th century, coffee was being grown in the Yemeni district of Arabia then by the 16th century it was known from Persia to Turkey.

According to their website, Dutch Bros began in 1992 as a pushcart by the railroad tracks in downtown Grants Pass, Oregon.

Dane and Travis Boersma had left the dairy business to serve up espresso, rock their favorite music, and make connections with the community. Dutch Bros started to catch on and the first franchise opened in 2000 and spread across the northwest.

Not only does Dutch Bros help you get your caffeine fix, but they also give back to the communities they’re in as well. They give back through Dutch Luv and Drink One for Dane and Buck for Kids. They also dedicate a day in May to raise funds for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
